A brief history of the Ministry of Education

1. Brief history: FDRE, Ministry of Education was founded in 1935.

2. Address: The headquarters is in Addis Ababa, Arada Sub City.

3. The Federal Ministry of Education is comprised of two sub-sectors: the General Education sub-sector and the Higher Education sub-sector.

General Education Sub Sector

The General Education sub sector oversees pre-primary, elementary, middle, and secondary education across all regions and city administrations. Below is a summary of the sector's data for the 2015 school year.

A. Number of Schools in Regional States and City Administrations during the 2015 School Year:

According to the School Improvement Portal (http://sip.moe.gov.et), there have been   56,618 schools providing education from grades 1 to 12 in the 2022/23 school year. Of these:

  • 11,095- pre-primary schools,
  • 37,412 - elementary and middle schools,
  • 3,791- secondary schools,
  • 4,320 - Alternative Basic Education (ABE) centers

 

B. Number of Students in the 2022/23 School Year:

In the 2022/23 school year, a total of 16,635,443 students have enrolled in elementary and middle levels (grades 1-8), with 8,708,334 male students and 7,927,109 female students. For grades 9-12, the total number of students enrolled has been 2,829,719, consisting of 1,383,442 males and 1,446,277 females. This data does not include the Tigray region.

C. Number of Teachers in the 2022/23 School Year:

  • Pre-primary level: 9,266 women, 62,705 men, totaling 71,971 teachers.
  • ‘O’ Class level: 7,470 women, 18,803 men, totaling 26,273 teachers.
  • Primary level: 195,231 women, 162,848 men, totaling 358,079 teachers.
  • Elementary level: 111,687 women, 42,999 men, totaling 154,686 teachers.
  • Secondary level: 113,125 women, 28,446 men, totaling 141,571 teachers.

       In total, the number of teachers for all levels has been 751,580.

d.       subjects that the new curriculum offers

Early Primary Education: Key focus areas include Native Language, Environmental Science, Personal and Social Emotional Development, Art, Mathematics, Health, and Physical Education.

 Elementary School (Grades 1-6): Subjects taught are Native Language, Federal Language, English Language, Environmental Science, Mathematics, Moral Education, Art, and Health and Physical Education.

Intermediate Level (Grades 7-8): The curriculum covers Native Language, Federal Language, English Language, General Science, Social Science, Civics Education, Information Technology, Health and Physical Education, Employment and Technical Education, Mathematics, and Art.

Secondary School (Grades 9-10): Common subjects include English, Mathematics, Information Technology, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, History, Civics Education, Economics, Native Language, Health and Physical Education, and optional subjects such as Federal Language, Foreign Language, and Art.

Senior Secondary School – Natural Sciences (Grades 11-12) subjects include:  English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Information Technology, and Agriculture.

 Senior Secondary School – Social Sciences (Grades 11-12) subjects include:  English, Mathematics, Geography, History, Economics, and Information Technology.

Number of Grade 12 National Exam Takers

Since the discontinuation of the Grade 10 national exam, the number of students taking the Grade 12 national university entrance exam has risen. In the 2022 & 2023 academic years, a total of 896,520 and 845,099 students, respectively, sat for the exam. However, in 2022/23 , 3.2% of the examinees achieved a score of 50% or higher, qualifying for admission to higher education institutions.

2. Higher Education sub-sector

a. Numbers of Teachers’ College

Teacher Education Colleges (TEC) aim to equip prospective teachers with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and professional development necessary to perform effectively in the classroom and serve the wider community. At present, 38 Teacher Education Colleges across the country offer three-year diploma programs, available in regular, winter, and continuous (evening and weekend) classes, to train prospective teachers

B. Number of Universities
Public higher education institutions are categorized into three main focus areas:

  • There are 8 research universities.
  • There are 17 universities of applied sciences.
  • In total, there are 21 public universities, contributing to an overall total of 46 universities.
  • Additionally, the private sector has established 659 colleges of private higher education and 5 private universities.

c. Number of students

In 2022/23, the total number of students registered in government higher education institutions for for regular, evening, and online programs—including bachelor's, master's, and PhD degrees has been  460,304, consisting of 317,837 males and 142,467 females. This total does not account for those admitted to the Remedial program or the universities in the Tigray region. Additionally, there were 436,920 students has been enrolled in private higher education institutions during the same academic year.
